Blue Ridge Mountainscape Cloisonné Pendant (1)

These vibrant cloisonné mountain landscapes are handcrafted from sterling silver and hand-painted with glass enamels. Cloisonné is an ancient metalworking technique using small fine silver wires and colorful glass enamels to create intricate designs. The small wires are bent into shapes to create small cells. The small cells are then carefully filled with grains of finely ground glass enamels and fired in a kiln. Subsequent coats of finely ground glass are applied and fired until a vibrant, original design is achieved.

Materials:

Silver
100% of the silver used in our designs is recycled. Silver is a precious metal, and Pure silver, also called fine silver, is 99.9% pure, often stamped “.999”. Pure silver is too soft for products like jewelry. So, to make fine silver more durable copper is added, creating sterling silver, which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, often stamped “sterling” or “.925”. Our sterling silver only ever contains silver and copper, and never contains other metals like zinc and nickel, which can irritate sensitive skin. Over time, any sterling silver jewelry exposed to air will tarnish, but this tarnish can be easily removed with a polishing cloth.

Enamel
Vitreous enamel is a material made by fusing powdered glass to metal by firing usually between 1,380 and 1,560 degrees. Layers of finely ground colorful glass are painted onto a metal surface and then fired. During firing the powder melts, flows, and then hardens into a smooth, durable colorful surface. This painting and firing process is repeated until the desired effect is achieved.
